The Astell&Kern PD5 is a high-resolution digital audio player (DAP) that combines a switchable Octa-DAC architecture with portability. Designed to bridge the gap between compact hand-friendly players and desktop-class fidelity, the PD5 features eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs, an octa-core CPU, and up to 28 hours of continuous battery life within a CNC-machined aluminium housing.
Equipped with Astell&Kern's TERATON ALPHA sound engine, the player offers a Dual Drive Mode that allows users to toggle between Quad-DAC mode (optimised for power efficiency and natural tonality) and Octa-DAC mode (unlocking maximum dynamic performance and up to 8Vrms output). Running a full Android operating system, the PD5 supports streaming services alongside offline hi-res audio playback, real-time ambient noise compensation via EnviroTune, and extensive wireless streaming options.
KEY FEATURES & PROPRIETARY TECHNOLOGIES
- Switchable Octa-DAC Architecture: Powered by eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC chips arranged to deliver wide dynamic range, extreme channel separation, and low total harmonic distortion.
- Dual Drive Mode (Quad / Octa): Allows switching between Quad-DAC mode (3Vrms unbalanced / 6Vrms balanced; up to 28 hours battery life) and Octa-DAC mode (4Vrms unbalanced / 8Vrms balanced; up to 15 hours battery life).
- EnviroTune Real-Time Acoustic Compensation: Utilises an integrated microphone to monitor ambient environment noise in real time, automatically compensating for masked frequencies without increasing total volume.
- TERATON ALPHA Sound Solution: Astell&Kern's ultimate sound engine designed to remove power supply noise, optimize amplification, and maintain signal purity from conversion to output stage.
- Enhanced Signal Alignment (ESA) & DAR: ESA technology minimises group delay for frequency alignment, while Digital Audio Remaster (DAR) upsamples audio streams for refined analog-like expression.
- Full Android OS & High-Res Wireless: Octa-core CPU running full Android with Google Play Store support, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3 (LDAC, LHDC, aptX HD), Roon Ready, and Qobuz Certification.
